ABS-CBN recently launched its TVplus digital box, a mahiwagang black that will magically allow their users access to a load of digital terrestrial TV (DTT) content. Delivering clear picture and sound not unlike DVDs, TVplus quality is distinctly different from the prevailing analog system, showing ABS-CBN TV content in HD video and sound quality.
With TVplus digital box, viewers of the channel have a bonus of four more exclusive free-to-air channels. Highlighted in this endeavor, the National Telecommunications Commission mandates that HD TV boxes include all the free TV channels broadcasting on digital.
Working on the HD switch since 2007, ABS-CBN went on several DTT trials in key areas all over the Philippines. As the pioneer TV network with the HD box, the network underwent heavy investment, especially on the infrastructure.
“We met obstacles, it was a long journey, but it was all worth it. We believe the inspiration and information of digital TV will beam into our homes will help open new windows of opportunities for every Filipino family. Digital TV is the future of TV, and the biggest innovation on free TV today,” said ABS-CBN Chairman Eugenio “Gabby” Lopez III at the launch.
The ABS-CBN TVplus comes with four exclusive free-to-air channels, including movie channel CineMo, children’s entertainment Yey, the Knowledge Channel, DZMM TeleRadyo.
A worthy investment, the ABS-CBN TVplus does come with unconventional add-ons. According to Carlo Katigbak, ABS-CBN Head of Access, “Many other digiboxes will come into the market, but it will only be the TVplus that will be able to receive the 4 additional channels. Unless you use our Blackbox, you can’t get those channels.”
The cost? Selling at P2,500.00 per unit, the black box is available at retail shops like the ABS-CBN stores, SM Appliance Centers, 2Go Express and Solid Service Center, Villman, and Silicon Valley. Count in the employees their sales units, as selling the TVplus box gives ABS-CBN staff some pretty nice perks.
Next steps include creating original content, as well as adding more channels into the lineup.
